History

The increasing complexity of medical imaging equipment as a result of technological advances requires the comprehension and critical thinking capability with deductive reasoning at the Bachelor‘s degree level for Radiography. There are about 10 programs at Bachelor‘s degree level for Radiography in Nigeria. Interestingly, there is none in the North Central region of Nigeria. A recent needs assessment of the Nigerian health sector established that Nigeria has less than one-tenth of its required number of Radiographers and identified that there is dearth in the quality, quantity and mix of health care workers with a skewed distribution towards urban and Southern population. Out of 840 Radiographers in Nigeria, only 14.3% are in the North Central zone, compared to the 43.0% in the South East and South West zones. Number of Radiography degree programs by geopolitical zone in 2016 indicates that out of a total of 6, the North Central zone has none.

The notion of establishing a Bachelor of Radiography degree program in University of Ilorin was conceived by Professor Akande and his team as the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences about 2012, with University Senate approval for the establishment of the Department of Radiography and incubated in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. The mandate was given to establish the Bachelor of Radiography degree program. After the establishment of the Department Dr. M. S. Ajao (now Professor M. S. Ajao) was appointed the Acting Head of Department in 2015.

Professor Akintade Dare was later appointed in July 2017 as a tenured Professor of Medical Radiography, and substantive Head of Department following his transfer of service from Bayero University, Kano where he was the founding Head of Department of Medical Radiography for almost eight (8) years. He was to give guidance for the implementation of the program, with academic curriculum development which was approved by the University Senate in 2019. Currently there are other two members of teaching staff in the Department; Dr. Muhammad Kabir Abdulkadir (Lecturer I) who recently completed his Ph.D. degree from Malasia, and Mr. Abdulazeez Alao (Lecturer II) with the hope of appointing more teaching staff and non-teaching staff for the Department. The Department is awaiting the NUC Resource visit for approval to admit our first set of B. Radiography degree students and later embark on the Pre-Accreditation visit of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN).

The department is committed to the University’s mission of teaching, learning, research and community development services in the field of Radiography and Radiation Sciences. It is aimed at producing men and women who are well-trained in all modalities of diagnostic Radiography with the main purpose of meeting national and international needs, and produce students who are adequately prepared for postgraduate work.
