Aims

The aim of the Bachelor of Radiography degree program in University of Ilorin is to provide students with integrated learning experience in theory and practice that will enable them to provide high quality images and optimum patient care to meet both local and international needs in the practice of radiography profession, producing better by far graduates, particularly as Nigerian trained radiography graduates are in high demand in the world.

Program Objectives

  • 1. prepare students with sufficient theoretical scientific knowledge base and practical skills that enable them assume professional positions as radiographers/diagnostic medical image scientists who can use the most complex medical imaging equipment for radio-diagnostic and therapeutic procedures;
  • 2. develop in students, the relevant practical and technological competence in radiography practice at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare and in the global environment;
  • 3. assist students in the development of interpersonal skills necessary to function as members of the health team;
  • 4. develop in students good working knowledge and skills in all modalities and be equipped to specialize in any of the subspecialties after qualification;
  • 5. prepare students with sufficient knowledge and analytical skills that equip them for further studies, and research development;
  • 6. generate in students an appreciation of the role of radiography in healthcare delivery, environmental and social relevance, such as rural radiography, bioinformatics and information technology;

Product (Radiographer) Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, the radiographer shall be able to:

  • Apply the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, radiographic positioning and techniques to demonstrate anatomical structures on radiographs or other imaging receptors.
  • Determine exposure factors to achieve optimum radiographic techniques with minimum radiation exposure to the patient.
  • 3. Evaluate radiographic images for appropriate positioning and imaging quality.
  • 4. Apply the principles of radiation protection for the patient, self, personnel and others.
  • 5. Provide patient care and comfort, with high regard for patient rights and dignity.
  • 6. Recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate lifesaving first aid and basic life support procedures.
  • 7. Evaluate the performance of radiologic systems, know the safe limits of equipment operation, and report malfunctions to the proper authorities.
  • 8. Exercise independent judgment and discretion in the technical performance of medical imaging procedures.

Unique Features of the Programme

The B.Rad degree programme in University of Ilorin has peculiar features, as it stands out to be among the first to introduce artificial intelligence, veterinary radiography and digital radiography courses into the undergraduate curriculum. These features aim to meet both local and international needs in the practice of radiography profession particularly as Nigerian trained radiography graduates are in high demand and presently working everywhere all over the world.

Opportunities

The Bachelor of Radiography degree will provide various opportunities. There are abundant job opportunities for graduate Medical Radiographers and Radiological Scientists in Teaching Hospitals, Specialist Hospitals, General Hospitals, Health Clinics, industry and institutions of higher learning. Job prospects will continue to increase with the fast expansion of the Healthcare System and advanced Medical Imaging Technology in Nigeria and Africa. Academic and research positions in institution of higher learning are fertile grounds for the academically inclined professional/medical Radiographer and Radiological Scientist.
